Chitwan National Park is the first national park in Nepal, Formerly called Royal Chitwan National Park it was established in 1973 and granted the status of a World Heritage Site in 1984. Situated in the Terai belt of Nepal. This well known national park covers 932 Sq.Km. in the subtropical lowlands of the inner Terai. It is a famous national park for its flora and fauna. The park was designated as a world Heritage site in 1984.
There are more than 43 Species of mammals in the park. The park is specially renowned for its protection of the endangered one – horned rhinoceros, Bengal tiger and Gharial crocodile alone with many other common species of wild animals. The park also secures populations of endangered species such as gaur, wild elephant, four horned antelope, striped hyena, pangolin, gangetic dolphin, monitor lizard and python.
There are over 450 species of birds including Bengal florican, giant hornbill, lesser florican, black stork and white stork, kingfisher, flycatchers and woodpeckers. The best time for bird watching are in March and December.
