J.O.M. Roberts and Sen Tenzing made the first successful ascent of Mera Peak on 20 May 1953. The route they used is still the standard route. There are many other routes to the peak, but none of them are easy. Some of them require crossing very high and difficult passes. This leads to a true mountaineering experience. In the end, all efforts and hard work is paid off with spectacular scenery as Mera provides one of the finest viewpoints in Nepal.
As you trekthrough the beautiful high alpine surroundings,Mera peak can be seen soaring over the valley, in all its glory. Dominating the skyline, above the wide and thickly forested valley, Mera peak rises to the south of Everest, showcasing four of the world’s highest mountains. With the guidance of experienced Sherpas, climbing guides and the Mosaic team, this adventure will be one not to be forgotten.
Our representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel. If time permits, we will have a brief meeting about the trekking in our office. O/N at hotel.
Before climbing to the peak, you must have Peak Climbing Permits. While we arrange these permits, you will be taken to Balaju, a natural rock climbing spot for your climbing course before departure to Lukla. The one-day course will provide excellent opportunities to learn how to use rope, harness, Ice axe, crampons and keeps you physically prepared. O/N at hotel.
Fly to Lukla early in the morning. It takes about 35 minutes to reach Lukla where we arrange porters. After taking breakfast we embark our trek towards Chutenga. A good trail leads through pastures to the edge of a diminishing forest of rhododendron and pine which clothes the steep hillsides above Lukla. Continuing the trail via ridges and streams up to ‘kharka’ used for grazing yaks where we’ll stop. O/N at tented camp.
The trail crosses the Kalo Himal Ridge which separates the Khumbu from the Hinku Valley. Further ahead, we lead across the ridge called Zatrawa La, traversing to the right and finally descending steeply to Tuli Kharka (big pasture) where there are several basic lodges. O/N at tented camp.
After taking breakfast we continue our journey descending to Hinku valley of Kote. This is a good place to camp and there are several teahouses around. As you reach Kote, you enjoy some great views of Mera and Hinku valley. O/N at tented camp.
The route to Tangnang takes you steadily up through open pasture fields, used for the summer grazing of yaks brought up from the lower valleys. En-route to Tangnang we pass a 200 year-old Lungsumgba Gompa from where we can find Mera peak scripted in rock. Finally, you reach at Thagnang from where you view the Mera glacier in the horizon. O/N at tented camp.
In order to acclimatize and adjust to the thinning air we will spend a day at Thagnak. It is not recommended to stay idle although it is a rest day; instead we have to stay active to be ready for next day's adventure. So after breakfast, we hike for about 3 hours up to Charpate Himal Glacier. We will observe Mera North very closely. After an hour's pleasant hike downwards, we will be back at the camp at Thangnang.
From Thagnak, you start walking through sideways of the moraine of Dig Glacier and Dig Kharka. This particular route offers you some great spectacular views of Charpate Himal. The trail keeps on climbing through moraines towards the south of the Hinku Nup and Shar Glaciers, and then finally you start to climb a steep hill that leads you to Khare (5,099 m). It is such a pleasure to view beautiful North face of Mera Peak from our campsite at Khare. O/N at tented camp.
This is another important acclimatization day (at 5,300m) for you as you have to make a final preparation for the climb. A three-hour ascending from here leads you to Mera La (5,415m) Pass. Usually during Nov-April, this pass remains covered with snow. This pass offers some excellent spectacular views of the mountains. As you descend about 100m down the Hongu side you find yourself enjoying at a night camp in the base camp (5,300m) in the moraine below the ice.
This part of the route takes you up to the highest camp located at about 5,800m on the Northern slopes of the upper mountain. You will be walking up for 4 hours and then setting up a high camp and enjoy rest of the day with the stunning views of Mt. Everest, Makalu, Cho-Oyu, and south face of Lotshe, Nuptse, Chamlang and Baruntse. O/N at High camp.
This is probably the most important and toughest day of our journey. With Incessant attempts, we finally scale the summit. From the summit, we can embrace the most spectacular view of Mt. Everest (8848 m), Mt. Kanchanjunga (8586 m), Mt. Lhotse(8516 m), Mt. Makalau(8485 m ) and more other mountains having over 7000m height. You then retrace your steps to Khare after the climb. O/N in tented camp at Khare.
On this day, you find yourself retracing the trail back to Kote. You will spend a night in a camp set near by the river.
You will follow another new route back to Lukla that stays high on the open hillside. Rather than winding through the previous one, you will be walking down and through a quicker return. This trial provides you some fantastic views of the backside of Mera, a differently beautiful angle. O/N at tented camp
This trail takes you through a series of rises and high plateau till the windy craggy Zatrawa La (4,580m), the gateway to the Dudh Kosi valley and the trail to Lukla, from where we look back to the Hinku wilderness for the last time. From Zatrawa La we descend towards the Lukla village where we conclude the trekking. O/N at hotel.
Fly back to Kathmandu where we will transfer you to your hotel. At the day time you will enjoy with Nepali food at Thamel, a tourism hub of Nepal. O/N at hotel.
After breakfast you can enjoy a full day Kathmandu city tour with our tour guide. The sightseeing program is focused on to introduce some highlights and UNESCO World Heritage sites of Kathmandu such as Durbar square, Swoyambhunath (monkey temple), Pashupatinath and Bouddhanath. In the evening, we will purchase souvenir for your nearest and dearest at your choice in Thamel. O/N at hotel.
After breakfast, the trip ends. Our representative will transfer you to the airport for your next destination. Even if you wish to stay longer in Nepal and depart on a later date, we would always love another opportunity to serve you.
